Doll Tutu Tutorial

Happy Friday!  Have you entered the American Girl Doll and Wardrobe Giveaway yet?!  Hop on over and do it now!  It's OK...I'll wait ;-)

OK, now that you're back, let's talk about today's tutorial.

This sweet little tutu is simple enough that your kiddos can make one too.  All you need to make 1 tutu are:

  • roll of 6 inch wide tulle (really, you can make tons of tutus with one roll!)
  • 12 inches of 1/2 inch wide elastic
  • sewing machine OR needle and thread
  • scissors OR rotary cutter/healing mat
First, you're going to cut two different lengths of tulle.  The short pieces will be 3 inches wide and 6 inches long.  I just snipped pieces off of the end of my roll every 3 inches.  The long pieces are going to be 3 inches wide and 10 inches long.  To cut these, I cut 10 inch lengths and then cut them in half lengthwise.  You can do this with scissors or a rotary cutter - whatever you have.  Don't worry too much about being exact - you're going to trim the edges of your tutu when you are finished.

Next, you're going to overlap the edges of your elastic by 1/2 an inch so that you have an 11 inch wide circle.  Sew around the edges in a square to secure.

Now, alternating short and long pieces of tulle, tie the pieces in a double knot around the elastic.  I like to pull the knot on the long pieces to the bottom edge of the elastic, and leave the short pieces facing forward, like so:

Keep going until you can't fit any more tulle strips on the elastic - the bunchier, the better!

And voila!

This is a great craft for kids - my 8 year old daughter made this while watching a movie.  As long as they know how to tie a knot, they're set.  This would be a fun craft to make at a slumber or birthday party - just sew those elastic waistbands and cut the tulle ahead of time, and you're all set!

Princess Dress for my Princess - Belle Edition

***disclosure: this post contains affiliate links***

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we are heading to Disneyland in a few weeks - we can't wait!!  The girls went when they were 3 and 10 months, so this will really be the first time that they will remember.  My oldest was HUGE into princesses at 3...she wore a dress up outfit every day we were in the park.  Back then, "Cin-lella" was her favorite.  Now that she's a mature lady of almost 9, she isn't into dress up on a daily basis, but she did request a dress so she could be like her current favorite princess: Belle.

There are a few ideas out in blog land, but I chose to just turn my favorite peasant dress pattern into a ball gown with a few modifications.  My daughter wanted something comfortable (those dresses that you buy in the park are SO itchy!), and I didn't want to spend a ton of time or money for something that she will maybe wear twice.  Inexpensive quilting cotton and a pattern that is super easy to sew up made this a fun sew.

First, I added an underskirt that is a few inches longer than the regular skirt length.  Then I spaced some marks about 10 inches apart and 10 inches from the hem along the bottom of the overskirt.  I cut 1/4 inch elastic in 5 inch lengths and sewed them from the mark to the hem, pulling the elastic as I went to make the fabric ruche.  Then, I added the light yellow sash to mimic the detail on Belle's skirt.  I just tacked it down right where each ruche line started.

Since Belle's dress goes off the shoulder's and I wanted something a bit more modest (and let's face it, comfortable) for my girl, I added some more of the sash to the top of the bodice and finished it off with a pink rose.

The result is a cute, comfortable dress for my little princess.  The best part: it only cost $6 for the fabric (thanks, Joann coupons!) as opposed to $100 like the scratchy, glittertacular dresses that they sell in the park.  If she only wears it on our trip, I won't mind - but she's already talking about using it as her Halloween costume.  Yay!

Stay tuned for more Disney sewing next week and don't forget to enter the American Girl Doll and Wardrobe giveaway by February 3!

Tried and Tested: The Endless Dress by Jocole Patterns

Well hello!

Yes, it's been quiet around these parts, but I have several reasons, which I will be sharing with you in the next few weeks.  HINT: the sewing machine has been a-rockin!

First up, I was able to test Jocole Pattern's new design - The Endless Dress.  Why Endless?  Well, because there are a TON of options to customize this sweet little number!  Jocole offers an expansion pack with even more options so really, the possibilities are ENDLESS!

For my version, I went with what my almost 9 year old wanted.  She has really been playing a lot with her Kit Kitteridge AG Doll, so she asked for something similar to what Kit would wear.  We went shopping together and she fell in love with this aqua floral fabric.  The tiny white and grey flowers remind me of the chicken feed dress that Kit's mom made for her!

Since springtime in Seattle is still pretty chilly, I chose the 3/4 sleeve option, and then added cuffs of my own design.

I love the sweet collar, and the fit is very true to size.  The best part of this pattern?  It goes from Newborn to size 14 AND includes a doll dress pattern!  Such a great deal!

The construction for this dress is very straightforward, and the instructions were easy to follow.  My only complaint (and really, it's not much of one!) is that with all of the options, the pattern is long, but there are jump links so you don't have to scroll through the whole thing.  The pattern pieces themselves came together quickly and the pieces didn't take long to cut out.

Check out the Jocole Facebook Page for some great variations so you can see just how versatile the Endless Dress really is!

The Details:
Pattern: The Endless Dress with Volume One Add on Pack by Jocole Patterns
Size: 8
Modifications made: None
Fabric Used: Quilting Cotton, found at Joann Fabric
Overall Thoughts: This is a great pattern with a big range of sizes with tons of options.  Easy construction and clear instructions.  Perfect for someone who is intimidated to sew a dress for the first time.

Stay tuned for more fun projects!

InstaDecember

Whew - can you believe that we're already a week into 2014!?!  How'd that happen?!

December was a crazy month - 2 holidays, 8 days out of town, lots of custom orders for the shop, and a snow day (which always throws Seattle into a tizzy - even though the snow melted after about 3 hours!).  Oh, and Santa gave us an amazing present!

Here's how the month went down at the Graceful Rose house:

We have cut down our tree this year, in the rain, like true Washingtonians.  Yep, it was wet.  Our tree was so soggy that the saw turned the wood to goo.  Oh well...we had fun!

My husband was lucky enough to go to the Seahawks-Saints game, so our girls asked me to take this picture before the game to send to him.  They were in crazy Beast Mode!

As someone who grew up not celebrating Christmas, I must admit...I do love Christmas trees!

My little loves on the last night of Hanukkah.

Cookies for Santa...someone had to test them out!

It's our tradition to go to see Santa at Macy's and then send our letters there.  The girls love it every year!

I saw this AWESOME wine glass at a local grocery store.  It would be perfect for watching Cougar Town!

My big girl and I.  And our crazy hats :)

Emma, our Elf, decided to watch me sew.  Sorry for those of you who love your elves...ours kind of creeps me out ;-)

Wintertime favorite: French Onion Soup.  Soooooo good.

Oh, this girl.  She kills me!

We had a few fun excursions to the Seattle Gingerbread House show and also a few local tree farms.
Christmas jammies on Christmas Eve.  Wish I could just keep them like this forever!

Pre-present opening destruction.  Yes, it was still dark outside.

Santa was good to us :o) Stay tuned for some Disneyland related crafts before our trip next month!

My husband's grandparents had a farm near Portland, OR, and when they passed away, the family sold the land to the local parks department.  The park just opened and it was so fun to visit it!  The barn in the background is there because of the old barn on the property.  I imagine my late grandparents in law would have loved sitting on the bench near the play ground and watching the neighborhood kids play :)
We got to visit with friends from an old playgroup who are living in Germany.  Even after no seeing each other for 3 and a half years, these two were back to being BFFs :)

We saw the Spruce Goose and um...it's BIG.  So big that this was all I could fit in the frame:

A boy is never too old to dream about flying one of these :)

Coffee date night.  We got to use our free babysitting to the fullest while visiting family!

Best. Christmas Tree.  EVER!

There was a whole lot of partying going on and this kid finally had to crash.

Have you ever played Blokus?  It's a great family game!

Yelling O for our Ducks while they played Texas in the Alamo Bowl :)

I have no excuse for the sparrow picture except that it was New Year's Eve and...there was wine involved.

Last hugs with old friends before we all departed for home on New Year's Day.

And there you have it!  December in an Insta!  Remember, you can follow me on instagram - I'm thegracefulroseshop :)
